St. David’s HealthCare
To Open First Freestanding
Emergency Department in Central Texas
AUSTIN, Texas—St. David’s HealthCare today announced plans to open the first freestanding emergency department (ED) in Central Texas. It will feature 12 patient beds, advanced testing capabilities including radiological testing (CT and ultrasound) and a medical lab, and will be staffed by board-certified emergency medicine physicians affiliated with St. David’s HealthCare.
Freestanding emergency departments are full-service emergency departments that do not have attached inpatient facilities. This ED will serve as an extension of St. David’s South Austin Medical Center, which treated more adult patients than any other emergency department in Austin in 2009.
“Freestanding EDs are a growing trend in the health care industry,” John Blewett, M.D., president of Capitol Emergency Associates, which staffs all of St. David’s HealthCare’s emergency rooms, said. “They can help alleviate busy emergency rooms and provide patients who do not require inpatient treatment with exceptional medical care in a timely manner.”
Patients requiring inpatient care will be transported from the freestanding ED to area hospitals.
“This gives St. David’s HealthCare the unique opportunity to bring board-certified emergency room physicians with experience treating trauma-related injuries and medical emergencies to an area of Central Texas that does not already have an acute care facility in its back yard,” Mark Clayton, senior vice president of St. David’s HealthCare, said. “The freestanding ED will bring advanced care capability to a growing area of Travis County.”
The freestanding ED, scheduled to open early next year, will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It will be located in front of Bee Cave’s City Hall at the Hill Country Galleria.
